Pedra da Gávea
Pedra da Gávea is the flat mountain that can be seen off in the distance from several points in the city. It has a great trail to the summit where you have an incredible view of Barra da Tijuca, São Conrado, Zona Sul, Lagoa, and Floresta da Tijuca. It also offers the rare opportunity to be at the same altitude as the hang gliders that launch from near by Pedra Bonita. This trail through the Atlantic Rain Forest is quite steep but also exciting, and includes a simple introduction to rock climbing close to the top. On the way back down we can stop at a small waterfall to wash off and cool down.
Altitude: 842m
Difficulty/Duration: difficult/full day
Features: Atlantic Rain Forest, short rock climb, 360 degree view of Rio, small waterfall at base
