Deserted Beaches of Barra de Guaratiba
About an hour and a half drive from the center of Rio exist some of the most beautiful beaches the city has to offer. Located inside a state park there is a strip of undeveloped coastline that can only be reached by trail and has been declared a biological reservation by the government. With their white sands, blue waters, and green forests, the beaches of Perigoso, Meio, Funda, and Inferno offer a great escape from the crowded and noisy beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana. We take the trail from the neighborhood of Guaratiba, through the Atlantic Rain forest and over a small mountain range, which offers some incredible views of the Bay of Sepatiba and the Atlantic Ocean, as well as the city of Rio. We then descend to the beaches where can have a quiet picnic and spend the day relaxing and swimming. The trail back is light and takes us along the rocky coastline, which is dotted with islands amidst the wide open sea. Once we reach Guartiba again, I know a charming little place to enjoy a cold drink, relax on the veranda, and watch one of the most astonishing sunsets around.
