We don’t have a rigid plan for day trips in Rio. The idea is to kick back and have a pleasant and relaxing day. What we do depends on the weather, winds and your mood. When you arrive at the boat, we can go through the choices and decided what we are going to do for the day, or, if you have something specific in mind, just tell us and we will try our best to accommodate you.
Some Ideas
We can sail around Guarnabara Bay where Rio is located, but swimming is not recommend. However, there are the beautiful sights of the Christ at Corcavado, the Sugar Loaf with its cable cars, Niteroi, the port, or we can go to Paquetá, an island in the north of the bay with nice restaurants, horse and buggy rides and a simple, relaxed atmosphere (about 2 hours each way).
Another great sail is up the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema with a stop at the nearby Cagarras Islands for a swim and snorkeling. You may even get the chance of swimming with dolphins in the wild.
If you want to go to the beaches, we can sail over to Itaipu (about 1-1/2 hour) where the water is clean and the fish restaurants are superb. There you can either order food to be delivered straight to the boat, or take the dingy to the beach for a meal.
Another option is to stop off at the Rio Yacht Club in Niteroi for a drink or light lunch and a dip in the pool; this little group has eight Olympic medal winners as members. There is a great view of Rio during sunset.
If you aren’t in the restaurant mood, we can stock the boat with whatever you want so you can eat on board. There is always water, beer and çachasa on board. A sunset meal on board is an enjoyable experience.
A word about sailing in Rio. The winds in the area are quite funky…sometimes we have a great exciting sail and sometimes we simply have to motor around and try to find the wind. Usually in the mornings we have calms but generally the wind picks up in the afternoon. So, if people promise to take you “sailing” in Rio, you may very well be motoring or for the pedantic, will be sitting in the same place for hours with the sails up. Flexibility is the word of the day.
